Noah

Noah Rauch Senior Vice President, Education & Public Programs National September 11 Memorial & Museum

Noah Rauch is the Senior Vice President for Education & Public Programs at the 9/11 Memorial Museum, where he oversees the educational, interpretive, civic training, and public programs for the institution. Previously, he managed grants as Project Coordinator for the Center for Informal Learning and Schools at the Exploratorium, worked as an Educator at the Natural History Museum in Los Angeles and Zeum, an arts and technology museum in San Francisco, and was a School, Youth, and Family Programs Intern Educator at the Brooklyn Museum of Art. He received an Ed.M in Arts-in-Education from the Harvard Graduate School of Education and a BA in American Studies from Wesleyan University. He has been to all 50 states.

Career Growth in Museum Education

In a field without a clear career ladder, and in which “moving up” often means moving out or sideways, how can museum education professionals craft a clear message and pitch their skills honed both in and outside the workplace?

 

NYCMER invites museum educators at all levels of experience and from all branches of the field to workshop their narratives and resumes in a supportive space. Hear from Claudia Ocello, one of the authors of the recent American Alliance of Museums blog post “Leaving the Museum Field,” who will share findings from a recent survey of museum professionals regarding why people leave (and stay in) the field, as well as explore strategies to address these issues on a personal, professional, and institutional level.

 

The program will include several opportunities to put those strategies into action. Participants will engage in an exercise to assess job descriptions in support of both those posting and seeking positions. Through discussion groups facilitated by leaders in the field, we will collaboratively develop personal narratives, identify strengths, brainstorm skill development outside of current positions, and discuss how to create supportive work communities. The program will close with an opportunity to peer review resumes, and all participants are encouraged to bring an updated resume or CV.

 

Speaker Info:

Claudia Ocello: Currently President & CEO of Museum Partners Consulting, LLC, Claudia has over 25 years’ experience in exhibition development, education, evaluation, and accessibility. Previously she worked full-time at Save Ellis Island, Inc; The New Jersey Historical Society; and The Barnum Museum, CT. A former classroom teacher, Claudia earned an MS in Museum Education from Bank Street College of Education and has won awards from AASLH, AAM, and the NJ Association of Museums for excellence in exhibitions, programs, and practice. Ever grateful, she “pays it forward” by teaching in Seton Hall University’s MA in Museum Professions Program and volunteering on the board of the Education Committee of AAM.
