Job Title: Education Program Associate


Description: Home of African American inventor, poet, and humanist Lewis H. Latimer, the Lewis H. Latimer House Museum is looking for a dedicated Education Program Associate to join the team. This position works closely with the Executive Director within a small team and offers an exciting opportunity of growth in the fields of museum education, arts & culture, and nonprofit management. Starting as part-time, this position has the potential of being extended to full-time with benefits in a year. A New York City Landmark, the historic house of African American inventor, self-taught Renaissance man, and son of fugitive slaves Lewis H. Latimer (1848-1928), the Lewis H. Latimer House Museum calls attention to Latimer’s and other African Americans’ contribution to science, technology, arts, poetry, and American life, through innovative tours, exhibits, public and educational programs in the above areas. The Lewis H. Latimer House is owned by the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation, operated by the Lewis H. Latimer Fund, Inc., and is a member of the Historic House Trust. More information is available at Responsibilities: • Design curriculum and lesson plans that are aligned with the New York State Standards and Department of Education (DOE)’s Scope and Sequence, for short- and long-term educational programs focusing on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, & Math) and history. • Coordinate with teaching artists, local schools, families, community centers, DOE, and other partners to plan and organize the museum’s educational programs, which include guided tours, open houses, in-school residencies, after-school programs, and the Tinker Lab Young Inventors Workshop. Lead tours and workshops when needed. • Train, support, and supervise teaching artists, educational interns, and volunteers. • Conduct outreach activities to promote and expand existing educational programs, specifically by attending school fairs, PTA meetings, teachers’ professional development days, and other community gatherings. Build and maintain relationships with superintendent’s offices, schools, DOE, and other stakeholders. • Assist with other public programs and development efforts, and attend meetings on behalf of the museum as assigned by the Executive Director.

Qualifications: • Two or more years of classroom or museum teaching experience. • Must have familiarity with the NYC school system, knowledge of New York State Learning Standards, and experience in curriculum development. • Excellent written and spoken communication skills, comfortable interacting with teachers, school administrators, and teaching artists.• Technology savvy, skilled in Microsoft Excel, has interest in learning about the children’s coding programs taught at the museum. • Able to work on weekends and evenings if needed. • Organizational skills and punctuality are essential to this position, so are the willingness to learn and a strong initiative to lead. • Passionate about STEAM education and bringing educational resources to underserved communities.
