Description: As Manhattan’s oldest residence, the Morris-Jumel Mansion Museum presents American life from the colonial era to the present by preserving, collecting, and interpreting history, culture, and the arts to engage and inspire diverse audiences. Built in 1765 by British officer Roger Morris, the house was later inhabited by George Washington during the Battle of Harlem Heights in 1776 and the Jumel family from 1810 to 1865. Visitor Services: The museum’s Visitor Services department is literally the face of the organization, as the visitor services team is the first and generally the last person to interact with guests during their visit to the mansion. In recent years attendance has grown, especially during the weekend, necessitating more staff to assist with the visitor experience and flow. Role: The Visitor Services Associate will report to the Director of Visitor Services and will be responsible for guest intake/admissions, gift shop sales, stocking and inventory, assisting with public programs and third-party rentals. On occasion, the visitor services associate could be called upon to lead tours for adult groups. Responsibilities: The Visitor Services Associate will: •Greet and welcome all visitors •Assist in the daily operations of the admissions desk with a focus on customer service •Initiate and complete sales transactions with visitors. This includes greeting each customer, suggestive selling, order coordination, cash, checks, and credit card transactions, and thanking the guest. •Ensure that all displays and supplies are well stocked at all times. Advise when products are running low to ensure that merchandise is reordered in a timely manner. •Ensure that the Museum store is neat and orderly at all times. •Become familiar with and understand the features and benefits of Museum store products in order to sell them and answer customer questions. •Sell Memberships •Work with the Education and Public Programs department in the scheduling of school/group tours and programs and ensure proper payments and processing •Staff the front desk and events including weekends and some evenings and holidays •Assist with general administrative and clerical work, including filing, photocopying, and mailing •Perform other duties as needed •Answers the telephone and fields calls to appropriate staff members •May assist with tours of the museum Requirements • A passion for people, museums, and American history and art • Minimum one year of experience in a visitor facing role at a comparable organization • Experience in hospitality, retail, attractions, or cultural organizations preferred • High school diploma required; relevant coursework from an accredited college or university strongly preferred • Foreign language skills strongly preferred – Spanish • Knowledge of admissions, POS, and online ticketing systems • Ability to work with individuals from a wide variety of ethnic, cultural, and economic backgrounds • Ability to identify and positively resolve visitor issues in the moment; strong decision-making skills necessary • Must be able to work weekends, holidays, and special events as necessary • General knowledge of information technology and business software applications; must be highly proficient in using Microsoft Office Suite • Effective and persuasive communications skills; able to write and speak clearly and present information to a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders • Must be able to stand and move around public areas of the museum for extended periods of time
