The Apollo Theater envisions a new American canon centered on contributions to the performing arts by artists of the African diaspora, in America and beyond. Institutional artistic vision and its performance programs uplift the voices of Black and African American diaspora performers, honoring the legacy and advancing the path.

The Apollo Theater presents forward-looking, contemporary work while building on our legacy and history. Music is at its core, driving dance, theater, and performance art events that are large and small-scale.

About Apollo Education
The Apollo’s Education Department engages audiences of all ages through various programs and events. These include workshops and residencies, tours, seminars, and synchronous and asynchronous virtual learning for K-12 and adult audiences; career exploration and youth development through the Apollo Theater Academy; and events dedicated to deepening the understanding of the arts and cultural contributions of peoples of the African diaspora.

Position Description:
Apollo School Tour Programs highlight the legendary history and relationship 
between the Apollo Theater, Harlem, and African American culture. All tours are thematic, inquiry-based, interactive, use media and connect to national, state, and local arts and academic standards.

Reports to:
School Programs Manager

Job Requirements & Responsibilities:
• Lead Educational Themed Tours for grades K – 12 school groups 
• Must be able to retain and communicate historical information accurately and engagingly. 
• Be a quick and creative thinker and be able to adapt content and materials to the needs of the student group. Utilize age-appropriate strategies to engage guests. 
• Enthusiasm, flexibility, and the ability to work collaboratively in a team-orientated environment. 
• Able to work independently to deliver programs and content.
• Submit required written materials pertaining to tours, such as; reflections, evaluations, program assessments, and all other administrative requirements associated with conducting tours. 
• Prepare program supplies and materials for scheduled tours.

Candidate Qualifications:
• A Bachelor’s degree in Education, History or the Arts is required. 
Qualified applicants should enjoy working with the public and have prior experience leading programs for school groups in a classroom or cultural institution. 
• Must be able to work with students from diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds. 
• Strong knowledge of education theories including inquiry and object-based learning. Additionally, teaching with primary and secondary source artifacts, photos, and media.
• Candidates must have a demonstrated interest in performing and visual arts and 20th-century U.S. and NYC history. 
• Must have strong problem-solving skills to think quickly on their feet and balance the needs of both the visitors and the institution. 
• Familiarity with the NYC Social Studies Scope and Sequence, and NYC Blueprint for Teaching and Learning in the Arts. 
• Excellent communication and writing skills. 
• Must have strong interpersonal and organizational skills. 
• Essential to be flexible in order to work when scheduled.
• Proficiency in using computers, interactive media, and other relevant software, and email for communication.
