Position Description:
Develops and coordinates teen programs in the Everett Children’s Adventure Garden, and
supervises educational facilities and programs under supervision of the Director of ECAG and in
collaboration with other ECAG team members.

Additionally, this position supports, through actions and conduct, NYBG’s Inclusion, Diversity,
Equity and Accessibility initiatives and helps to build and maintain an inclusive organization
culture throughout the institution.

Job Requirements & Responsibilities:
• Under the supervision of the Director of ECAG and in collaboration with the Manager of ECAG and Camp Program Coordinators, provide leadership for and supervision of the Explainer Program.
• Coordinate the recruitment, application intake, interviews, and selection of Intern, Advanced, Camp, Master and Senior Explainers each year. Includes being the main liaison with partner high school program coordinators who support student volunteer opportunities and credit-based internships.
• Develop and lead training and refresher programs in collaboration with ECAG team in science content, program facilitation skills, public speaking skills, job readiness skills and leadership development and naturalist and citizen science skills for up to 75 volunteer Intern Explainers (weekday and weekend), 50 paid Advanced Explainers (weekends and school breaks) and up to 16 paid Master/Senior Explainers (weekday afternoons, weekend and school breaks) each year.
• Manage the scheduling of shifts as well as supervise and mentor tiers of Explainers in their facilitation of programs to the visiting school groups and family visitors, up to 175,000 visitors annually.
• Manage the implementation, collection, and analysis of evaluation data for the Explainer Program; including providing documentation to the Advancement Office and SCI Network NYC.
• Supervise educational facilities and programs on weekends as scheduled and weekdays as necessary.
• Work with Director of ECAG and the Manager of ECAG to develop and disseminate marketing materials for Explainer Program.
• Work with the Director of ECAG to maintain relevant budgets.
• Provide on-site instruction for school groups and the visiting public as needed, modeling best outdoor place-based teaching practices for adult and adolescent staff and volunteers.
• Support the maintenance of a teaching collection of plants in greenhouse.
• Assist ECAG Team with other duties as needed.
• Must work weekends and holidays, Tuesday-Saturday schedule; some evenings required for trainings, Family events and special events.

Candidate Qualifications:
• BA in Botany, Environmental Science, Education, Museum Studies or related field, masters preferred.
• Demonstrated teaching experience in informal outdoor settings
• Supervisory/leadership experience working with teens, especially youth from underserved communities
• Excellent written and oral communications skills
• Team player, creative, deep attention to detail and organized
