Alexa Fairchild Local Program Director Turnaround Arts: New York City

I am the newly appointed local project director for Turnaround Arts: New York City. Turnaround Arts uses arts education as a tool to empower school communities all across the country. Led by the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities, together with local partners, it connects schools with high-quality arts education resources to improve student motivation and attendance, parent engagement, and more. In New York City, The Fund for Public Schools, Department of Education and Department of Cultural Affairs are collaborating to support four schools in Central Brooklyn.

For ten years, I ran school programs at the Brooklyn Museum, where I worked with a talented team of educators to host kids and teachers for fun, engaging gallery experiences. My professional life includes serving on the Board of Directors for the Museum Education Roundtable and contributing as a peer reviewer to its publication, the Journal of Museum Education. I'm an avid presenter at local and national conferences, and served two years as president of the New York City Museum Educators Roundtable. I'm also on the Advisory Council of the Women's International Leadership Program at International House. I have worked at the Museum of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia (U.B.C.) in my hometown of Vancouver, Canada; Lower East Side Tenement Museum; and Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine. My graduate degrees are from Bank Street College of Education (M.S. in Ed.) and U.B.C. (M.A. in Art History). And when I'm not geeking out about the arts and education you’ll find me careening down the side of a mountain, on skis or a bike, depending on the season. I tweet as @alexainbrooklyn.
