The Green-Wood Cemetery was founded in 1838 as part of the Rural Cemetery Movement of the nineteenth century. Today, it remains an active cemetery as well as a vital and vibrant cultural institution, National Historic Landmark, and accredited arboretum welcoming more than 400,000 annual visitors. Green-Wood’s education department engages school audiences in exploration of the histories of some of our 570,000+ “permanent residents”; nature thriving across our 478 acres of urban green space; and the artistry of our more than 200,000 monuments and mausoleums as well as public artworks and exhibitions

Position Description:
Green-Wood’s education department develops, teaches, and oversees school programs on a variety of subjects in American history, art history, and environmental education for 3K through 12th grade students. We also develop, staff, and support family programs, summer internships, and other out-of-school-time activities for kids and families at Green-Wood.
A new environmental educator will join an existing team and will train for and lead school programs at least two days a week on a set schedule between Monday and Friday. Working hours will be 9am to 2pm, with occasional evening and weekend work. Educators will also act as program coordinators on a rotating basis, helping with program logistics while their colleagues teach. Educators will also help develop new program curricula and perform office work to support the department. The distribution of teaching and non-teaching work is assigned on a bi-weekly schedule, with occasional short-notice programs added to the schedule. This is a part-time, scheduled position for a minimum of ten weekly hours, but teaching and non-teaching work will vary week to week within the educator’s set work days.

Job Requirements & Responsibilities:
– Train for and lead 60-minute to two-hour programs on environmental education themes These will be outdoors, in hilly terrain, using curricula provided by Green-Wood.
– Create a welcoming, safe space for all visiting students and school staff from all backgrounds.
– Assist in research, development and revision of new programs as needed.
– Perform administrative and program coordination work as needed.
– Participate in ongoing training and professional development.
– Lead or assist with occasional professional development for school teachers and staff.
– Assist with marketing and outreach efforts with NYC schools.
– Assist with program evaluation as needed.
– Occasional weekday evening, weekend, and holiday work as needed.
– Occasional work with family programs as needed

Candidate Qualifications:
Personal Qualifications
– Bachelor’s Degree in relevant subject related to environmental education, ecology, life sciences or earth systems.
– Experience working with school-aged children in a formal or informal learning environment.
– Cultural competence to work with communities of color and immigrant communities in south Brooklyn, including predominantly Asian American and Latine communities in Sunset Park.
– At least two days/week of availability between 9am and 2pm, Monday-Friday.
– Ability to lead walking tours in hilly terrain.
– Solid computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite.
– Interest in working for a growing, developing educational department.
– Professional maturity, reliability, good judgment, integrity, warmth, and trust.
– A valid driver’s license.

Strongly preferred
– Ability to teach in Spanish or Mandarin.
– Familiarity with NYC Scope and Sequence, standards, and best practices for teaching science and/or environmental education.
– Experience leading outdoor programs for school-aged children.
– Experience teaching with monuments and/or memorials.
– Demonstrated interest in building community, social justice initiatives, and/or fostering cross-institutional partnerships.

Salary or Compensation:
Teaching= $50/hr; Prep/research/admin/all non-teaching work= $25/hr
