Artisans Asylum is one of the largest makerspaces in the United States, offering an inclusive and collaborative environment for creativity and innovation, fostering the conditions for freedom of thought, skill development, and agency necessary for anyone to build whatever they can imagine. Our 52,500 SF two-building campus located in lower Allston includes 15 shared shops, 170 individual studios, flex areas, classrooms, and meeting spaces in ADA accessible facilities. The shared shops include, but are not limited to, woodworking, jewelry, metal and machine shops, fiber arts, screen printing, electronics/robotics, digital fabrication and a design lab. A variety of membership/access options are available, and we offer over 40 classes each month in a wide range of fabrication disciplines and techniques. In addition, our Gallery A2 hosts public exhibits and a visiting artist/artisans program.

Artisans Asylum seeks a full-time Education Director to manage and oversee the day-to-day and long-range goals and operations of our education department. This position involves a variety of logistical, communication, and physical tasks related to developing, implementing, coordinating, and overseeing both on-site and outreach educational programming for adults, students, and families. The ideal candidate will have the ability to solve problems creatively and thoroughly. They will show consistent curiosity about and kindness toward others, and have a strong capacity for maintaining attention to detail across varied projects. The Education Director must show a deep respect for artists and culture, and have a willingness to grow. This role requires the ability to prioritize time effectively within a flexible atmosphere that includes an extended team of staff, members, and volunteers.

Job Requirements & Responsibilities:
Working closely with the Executive Director, the Education Director’s role is to ensure that the highest quality educational programming is offered by Artisans Asylum.

– Management: Oversee both the Registrar and Programs Coordinator. Work closely all together on class schedule, instructor assignments, and instructor professional development.
– Assessment: Consistently assess current and potential future education offerings to include the most popular classes, incorporate student feedback and optimize earned income potential.
– Collaboration: In partnership with Operations and Development departments, and instructors, ensure a holistic vision for educational programming (both for internal and external stakeholders).
Partnerships: Create and maintain partnerships with local community organizations to grow the reach of Artisans Asylum and educational programming.
Curriculum Development – Create proprietary curriculum for Artisans Asylum which can be created in partnership with Shop Leads, instructors, and internal stakeholders.

Candidate Qualifications:
– Demonstrated strong interest in the arts and culture sector
– Demonstrated strong interest in maker and startup business cultures
– Three plus years of education/teaching experience
– Demonstrated capacity for independent and collaborative work
– Demonstrated capacity for the management of multiple and varied projects with different delivery timelines
– Skilled in English written and verbal communication
– Commitment to advancing diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility
– Client-facing or customer support experience
– Strong organizational skills
– General computer and software literacy (Microsoft Office, Gmail, Zoom or comparable video conferencing platform, etc.)
– Prior experience working in non-traditional educational environments
– Experience working with artists, makers, volunteer groups, or non-profits
– Bachelor’s degree or equivalent accomplishment
