Position Description:
Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy is seeking an experienced part-time (Tuesday – Friday) Seasonal Environmental Educator to join its team!

The Conservancy’s environmental education programs activate Brooklyn Bridge Park as a living laboratory for understanding the ecology, history and built environment of Brooklyn’s waterfront. Our experiential programs prioritize impactful, place-based learning experiences that aim to inspire environmental connections and stewardship in Brooklyn Bridge Park. We’re seeking an energetic and experienced part-time (Tuesday – Friday) Seasonal Environmental Educator to facilitate fun and engaging environmental education programs for rising K-5th grade students in partnership with the Park’s exclusive summer camp operator, Trail Blazers. Hours will be limited to approximately 28 hours per week between July 8 – August 30, 2024 with a few days both the week prior and after dedicated training and wrap up.

The successful applicant will possess a knowledge of environmental science topics, such as urban ecology, waterfront history and sustainability practices. They should have proven track record teaching diverse audiences in an education and/or camp setting, including strong group management and practice adapting content and delivery to meet the diverse needs of campers ages 4-11 years old (K-5 grade). We seek a self-starter with a can-do attitude and great time management and communication skills that feels comfortable working both independently and in a collaborative team setting. Additional language fluency, encouraged.

Job Requirements & Responsibilities:

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

– Co-teaching outdoor environmental education classes for K-5th grade campers at sites throughout Brooklyn Bridge Park in all weather conditions;
– Preparing, transporting, setting up and breaking down education program materials at sites across Brooklyn Bridge Park;
– Contributing to the ongoing creation, evaluation and refinement of camp program curriculum;
– Working and effectively communicating with Trail Blazers counselors to successfully facilitate camp programs;
– Confidently and accurately enacting Conservancy safety procedures, as required;
– Providing support for other Conservancy education programs and projects, as needed.

Working Conditions:

Programs takes place outside in all weather conditions (heat, rain, etc.). Successful candidates will possess a(n)/the:

– Willingness to get dirty and handle live animals;
– Ability to crouch, bend, squat and lift up to 40 pounds;
– Ability to stand for extended periods of time, walk across the length of the Park and navigate uneven terrain (e.g. shoreline);
– Ability to work occasional extra hours or weekends for special programs;
– Either a valid driver’s license or ability to ride a bicycle, preferred.
– This is an on-site position, with no remote work option available. This position reports to the Education Manager.

Candidate Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Environmental Science, Ecology, Marine Biology, or related field; AND, at least 2 years teaching experience in these subject areas in a formal or informal K-12 setting; OR,
High school diploma; AND, at least 3 years teaching experience in these subject areas in a formal or informal K-12 setting.
